The family is said to be the basic unit of the society. In the field of Psychology, the family is indeed an important part of the upbringing of a growing child, for in that timeframe is when early foundations are stabilized, morals are founded, emotions are expanded, and the being of the child is formed and is continually evolving. Concurrently, These foundations are the very fragment that craft what kind of person we are in the concluding years. As stated by Crosson-Tower(1999),The familial member is walked through by the head of the family which is the parents notably during significant changes and through adolescence (p. 34).

If the basis of the quality of upbringing is truly dependent on the family, Supposing a child or the individual is raised under the roof of a dysfunctional family, how does that individually grow? Is it truly growth or an underlying regression of some sort?

According to Crosson-Tower(1999),”Every family faces problems in its day-to-day life. Many are able to overcome them, but those families that cannot conquer their problems cease to function in a manner that encourages the positive growth of their members” (p.34). She elaborated that when the positive growth and functionality of the family comes to a halt most especially the parents, the other members particularly the children comes to a halt as well.

Frequently, These children have a higher tendency of proclivity or leaning towards crimes notably substance abuse/use and prostitution and this is proven as stated by Beck(1972), “Children who encounter or experience being in a dysfunctional home experiences depression that more or less leads to drugs addiction due to parental deprivation or bereavement” (p. 220).

In conformity with Quigley(2003), “Studies have also found that girls whose fathers left the family earlier in their lives had the highest rates of early sexual activity and adolescent pregnancy” that somewhat is inclined with harlotry as well.

As said by an Anonymous case study interviewee, “I wasn’t very close to my family at that time. But when I started using drugs, I withdrew from my family completely … My parents were divorced”. A somewhat partial conclusion can be taken into thinking, that drugs as well as prostitution can sometimes not be just the effect but can also be the cause and vice-versa. It is consistent to say that it is conspicuously case to case dependent, but in a general sense there really is a proportional link between the dysfunctionality of the family to substance use and/or whoredom.

As said by Andre Dworkin, ““The men who use women as prostitutes…take women who have been sexually molested as children, who are poor, who are homeless, who have no help or solace in this society, and they use them”. As said by De Stefano(1991), “Drug-use leads to other crimes although drug use or abuse by itself is already a crime” (p. 41).

According to De Stefano(1991), “People in a healthy family work hard to face their problems and solve differences… They work hard to get past life’s daily problems, big and small, by facing up to them” (p. 10), “A family living with the disease of drug-addition is not a healthy one. It is not a family filled with love, commitment, trust and dependability. Instead, feeling of anxiety, guilt and fear” (p. 12). Through these two statements, An idea can be dissected about what is being said and that is if a dysfunctional family is a cause to the growing problem of drug-use and prostitution then the family in itself can be the cure to the latter.
