October Sky Letter

My name is Sonny and I am 18 years old, I am from Coalwood as well so we have something in common, you see now in which I am very proud of. Because of the event that happened some of the younger generation such as me and my friends’ think of you as our role models and have decided to follow in your footsteps except each of us want to pursue different careers. I want to become a Radiographist and specialize in Gamma rays, my friend Chris wants to become a mechanical engineer, my other friend Louis wants to become a marine officer and my other friend Tim wants to become an architect. I know that if we told everyone else in Coalwood they would think we’re absurd and are just being childish and that we should just quit but I now know that you are different and that you wouldn’t judge me. So I thank you in believing in yourself and your friends as they have set good examples for our generation and the outside world might not think of us becoming miners but as different individuals and us as successful people and even if we do become miners they should know that we are the building blocks of America’s society as a whole.

Any way the whole point of this letter is to tell you that we as the Coalwood younger generation would like to no not even like but love to thank you as a whole in the accomplishment you have achieved in getting out of Coalwood and following your dream as you and your friends were the first steps for us to succeed and believe in making our dreams become true. Even though you have probably received loads of letters and mine might not be different in any way I hope you have at least had the time to reflect upon your years when you were a member of the Coalwood community and reflect on what you have achieved as it has not only changed yourself but it has also changed our perspective of looking at our dreams and realizing that they may become true one day but not only our perspective of looking at our dreams but also the way we view our life from now on and I hope that whenever you look at yourself in the mirror you look at yourself in a good way and our eternal gratitude will be your as it was you and your friends who helped us realize that we are able to pursue our dreams and look at ourselves with a higher respect of self-esteem and acknowledgment.

Me and my friends now take your story as our guidelines towards life and hope you realize that you made a difference. Seeing as how well you Homer and your friends did me and my friends have come to realize how we only live once and that we should fulfill it to the upmost pleasure so now we have decided to follow into your legacy and have called us the Rocket Boys after you of course (I hope you don’t mind that we borrowed your name). Even though I was good at sports and I got a scholarship for football I didn’t want to leave my legacy (if I ever do have one) as one of the many few who left Coalwood on a football scholarship just like your brother, I wanted to be different so I declined the offer and decided to pursue my own dreams as did my friends. I know that you might not be able to relate to me that much as I was good at sports and you weren’t not that being bad at sports is bad it’s just that when I look at myself I wish I could see the “Homer Hickham Jr.” instead of my ordinary, boring self who has achieved nothing.

Overall, I know that I might never meet you and you might never meet me and that my letter is just like all your other fans who you receive letters from I just hope that you may be able to look at yourself by how you helped so many people by just never giving up on yourself when everyone else did and defy anyone and get rid of any of the obstacles that you faced in your teenage or adult hood years in becoming what you are now. With any bit of luck I hope I get you to send back and reply to my letter and if not I at least thank you for having the decency available to read all of fan mail as a celebrity for us “The Coalwood People”. I would also like to tell you that the people of Coalwood have changed their view of you and are very proud of you even though what happened to you many years ago and how they never had faith of you I am telling you know you are in our own “Hall of Fame”.
