The Civil Service Examination, specifically Professional and Subprofessional examinations, is one of the most common way for a Filipino citizen to have a Civil Service Eligibility. Every year thousands and thousands of people from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao apply to take the Civil Service Examination. But only few or a small percentage pass the said exam.

For an examinee to pass the Civil Service Exam, he or she has to have a general rating of 80% to pass the examination(s). And according to some examinees, the questions gets harder and harder as time pass by. Before I share to you some techniques on how to pass the Civil Service Examination, let me share you first the importance of the Civil Service Examination. Some examinees do not actually know this (maybe because they were forced by their parents to take the Civil Service Exams) but passing the Civil Service Exams and having an eligibility (whether fist level eligibility –Subprofessional or second level eligibility – Professional) is essential for a person if he/she wants to enter the government service. Without an eligibility you cannot work in a government office and have a permanent status. Question: What are the things that usually comes out in the Civil Service Examination? If you were able to visit the official website of Civil Service Commission particularly in their General Information on the Career Service Examination for 2012 here, you will see the scope of the Civil Service Exams. Below is an excerpt: 1. For Career Service Professional – In English and Filipino; vocabulary, grammar and correct usage, paragraph organization, reading comprehension, analogy, logic, and numerical reasoning.

2. For Career Service Subprofessional – In English and Filipino; vocabulary, grammar and correct usage, paragraph organization, reading comprehension, spelling, clerical operations, and numerical reasoning. Both Professional and Subprofessional levels of the examination shall have items on General Information, which shall include the following areas: Philippine Constitution, Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees (R.A. 6713), Peace and Human Rights Issues and Concepts, and Environment Management and Protection. How to pass the Civil Service Examination (Professional or Subprofessional)? Now that you know what are the scopes of the examination, let’s continue on how you can pass the Civil Service Exams. If you have taken any Civil Service Examination (Professional or Subprofessional) before but did not pass the exam, then you have the advantage. Why? Because you have firsthand knowledge and experience already. You will have a clearer idea on what are the things that you should review for the next exam.

Go to bookstores and look for relative or similar review materials. It does not necessarily mean that you should get a “Civil Service Exam Reviewer”. You may use CSAT reviewers and the likes. What is important is that your mind will be exercised and be familiar with the questions and answers that are related to the scope mentioned above. If you are a first time examinee, better ask people who already tool the Civil Service Examination so that you will have an idea. Just a tip, the Civil Service Commission does not give any review materials nor is not connected to authors who are making Civil Service Exam reviewers nor Review centers. Some people, books or review centers are claiming that they have a connection with the Civil Service Commission just to sell themselves. You should apply for the Civil Service Examination ahead of time. Do not wait for the deadline.

So that after you have applied for the Civil Service Examination, your focus now is reviewing for the Civil Service Exam. Applying for any Civil Service Examination on deadline can be stressful on your part, especially if the Civil Service Commission rejects your application due to incomplete or inappropriate requirements. Keywords here are REVIEW, FAMILIARIZE and EXERCISE. If you think you are not prepared for the Civil Service Exam then you should at least review constantly but not to the point that it will be stressful in your part. Some examinees, especially those who are on Collage level, have higher passing rate. Why? Because they rely on their stored knowledge. Their minds are still fresh and exercised, making it easier for them to recall things and answer accurately as fast as they can. It’s like an IQ test. Do pray and ask God that you will pass the Civil Service Exam. If possible pray every day specially before the examination day. But do not rely on prayers alone. Like the saying goes “Nasa Diyos ang awa, nasa tao ang gawa”.

Do not cram before the exam. Don’t study one day before or few days before the examination day. Chances are you will end up loosing all things that you have studied because your brain is still exhausted from cramming. Before the examination day, make sure to get enough rest, relax and sleep early. Make sure that you already know your room and school assignment days before the examination date once it is available.

Come early to the examination center. Do not be late, as you will not be permitted to take the examination anymore. During the examination day stay calm and read carefully the instructions. Do not leave an item unanswered and make sure you shade properly your answer. Hope this “How to Pass the Philippines Civil Service Examination” guide helped!
