Most people would assume that Candyman and Bloody Mary are just alike; but in fact they have many differences that most would not know unless they were familiar with the background stories of the two. Candyman; born as Daniel Robitaille, was an artist chosen by a rich, white landowner to paint a portrait of his daughter Caroline. The setting causes a love affair between Daniel and her, resulting in Caroline becoming pregnant. When Caroline’s father hears of the affair and pregnancy, Daniel is chased out of town and hunted down by him and many angry farms men.
He was then tortured by having his right hand sawed off by a rusty blade and his body being coated with fresh honey. A small boy tastes the honey on Daniel’s hand and says, “Candyman. ” The crowd then shouts out the name five times while bees swarm over his body, stinging him thousands of times. Caroline’s father taunts him on the way he now looks, with a mirror; he was forced to watch himself die while uttering his last words… “Candyman. ” Bloody Mary, on the other hand, was the first born daughter of King Henry VIII. When Mary’s father died, she would take the thrown as Queen Mary I.
However, there was controversy that the late king’s son should be crowned. Fortunately for her, it was proven that King Henry’s son was born from a different mother so Mary was announced as Queen. Mary had a number of miscarriages throughout her reign, and there was speculation that they were deliberately done by her; no one knows why. In the 1500’s, Queen Mary started burning protestants of the Roman church by the hundreds. This era was known as the Marian Exile. In the 1550’s Mary became ill and on November 17, 1558, she died in her home.
According to legend, if you look into a mirror and say the name Candyman five times, you will summon him to appear behind you, breathing down your neck; with a hook for a hand, he slits you from your groin to your gut. Candyman only kills those who believe in him, but proves to disbelievers that he is, in fact, real. He will torture you and turn your whole world upside down within a blink of an eye. Nobody comes out unharmed, most don’t come out alive. Bloody Mary is a children’s game of summoning an evil and vengeful witch. This is done by standing in a bathroom with one candle lit and calling her name, Bloody Mary, three times.
It is believed that by doing this will result in one of the following consequences: your eyes being ripped out of your head, you will be found with scratches covering your entire body, or you will drop dead at the sight of her. The stories of Bloody Mary have been told for centuries by children during slumber parties or as a simple game of truth or dare. Every child at one time or another has tried this summoning or knows someone who has. Candyman and Bloody Mary are both legends from many years ago with some similarities and many differences throughout their lives and deaths.
They both died angry, they both come back for vengeance, and they are both brought back by summoning them through a mirror. On the other hand, their lives were very different, with one being royalty and the other being an artist. Their deaths were also very different, with Bloody Mary having a fairly peaceful death and the Candyman being killed very violently. The consequences of summoning them are also very different. How true these summoning rituals are, I don’t know, I guess you’ll have to try it out and see for yourself.
