How both authors portray how women are deceived by men

Women used to be totally controlled by men, many across the world still are. But this still occurs in everyday life even at this present moment in time, many men still abuse women’s trust and betray them, control them, not allow them to have any freedom. Women are blinded when it comes to; ‘love’ even in today’s present-day society. ‘India. ‘ Written by Ravinder Randhawa and, ‘Tony Kites The Arch Deceiver,’ highlight this issue very well.

Thomas Hardy (1840- 1928) was the first major writer to focus on the countryside and on rural characters, his novels, stories and poems were set in the area he called, ‘Wessex,’ present day, ‘Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire. ‘ Hardy wrote at a period when life was changing in some areas for the first time in centuries. Railways were spreading rapidly as the industrial revolution started to affect the whole population. Many people were beginning to leave the countryside for jobs in the town and to move from job to job. It was also a period where belief in Christianity was under pressure.

Many people including Hardy experienced a loss of faith. These changes created a sense of challenge to traditional standards, which was often reflected in Hardy’s novels. Ravinder Randhaw was born in ‘India’ and grew up in Warwickshire. She is the founder of the Asian women’s founders collective, and for some years was its co-ordinator she has written a variety of different novels/ short stories and has also given numerous talks in universities across the United Kingdom and abroad.

‘Toney kites- The arch deceiver,’ was set in, ”Wessex’ present day ‘Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire. the story itself is mainly set near the country side ‘birds, insects’ and ‘ploughmen,’ on a, ‘horse-drawn- cart. ‘ This was the most popular form of transport at that particular stage in time. In total contrast to this, Ravinder Randhaw has not set, ‘India’ in any particular place. However the main events that occur in the story happen in a modern day society either in a university or college, across the United Kingdom. Ravinder Randhaw leaves it to her audience to decide where they want the story to be set.

There are a variety of different moods, which occur throughout, ‘Tony Kites- The arch deceiver. Due to the mixture of moods, Hardy has created in this novel depending on the type of audience that read it, will have different feelings and emotions towards the novel. Some readers would be supportive towards Tony and some will be opposed to his unfaithful actions. The scenery, ‘birds, insects and ploughman,’ will cause the readers to feel like they are in a calm place, where mood is calm and silent but as the story unveils the readers can see that Tony, is constantly watching whatever he says. This could be described as a jumpy, paranoid sort of mood.

The variety of moods present throughout the story, jus adds to the excitement and tension, which is felt by the readers throughout the story. In total contrast to this the mood in ‘India,’ is more sombre, as Inderjit is lovesick. She is madly in love with, ‘gold finger,’ – a character who hardly seems human. The way Ravinder Randhaw uses words such as, ‘red’ and ‘dead. ‘ Allow the readers to Prathieban Sathanathan Wider Reading Mrs Collins create vivid images in their heads of what’s going on in the play. By doing this Ravinder Randhaw also sets the mood that is continued throughout the rest of the story.

Tony Kites is the main character in, ‘The arch Deceiver. ‘ He had a, ‘little, round tight face. ‘ Which consisted of various, ‘seams here and there. ‘ These seams were said to be scars from when he had, ‘small pox. ‘ Tony seems to be every woman’s dream man, even the ‘seams’ on his face were not enough to hurt a ‘woman’s eye. ‘ It was very difficult for anyone to ever catch Tony smiling, ‘so very serious looking and unsmiling a was that young man. ‘ Usually he had such a serious look on his face that it was thought, ‘he couldn’t laugh at all without great pain to his conscience.

His physical attributes clearly indicate he wasn’t exactly the best looking man alive, but he had a certain something that attracted many women towards him. Tony was also said to have, ‘a religious’ manner about him. This was strange because this story was written during a period where belief of Christianity was under close scrutiny. Unity Sallet is one of Tony’s notorious past lovers. She is a, ‘handsome,’ girl. Tony had been very tender towards her before he got engaged. She had a ‘tender, chide’ voice which could be used to hypnotise men.

Milly Richards is Tony’s current fianci??. She is a ‘nice, light small tender looking thing? ‘ Milly is a ‘nice’ young lady, whom loves Tony dearly. Hannah Jolliver is, ‘another’ young beauty. She was the very ‘first’ lady whom Tony had fallen in love with. He had almost arranged to marry her, before Milly. In his opinion, ‘she is much more of a dashing girl than Milly Richards. ‘ She isn’t as desperate as the other girls he has dated. She seems to be a stronger character mentally. But it is clearly shown in the story that she still cares a great deal about him still.

In ‘India,’ written by Ravinder Randhaw, the main character is Intherjeet, – ‘In-der-jit. ‘ Unlike in ‘The arch deceiver,’ this story consists of a female character playing the main role. Inderjit has a low opinion of herself; she describes herself as, and ‘plain-Jane-India. ‘ She thinks her nose sticks out like the, ‘rock of Gibraltar. ‘ She thinks her skin, ‘is wrinkled like the folds on a mountain. ‘ She feels she has spots like, ‘colonies of blackheads. ‘ She thinks she has a, ‘well rounded stomach,’ and ‘excess skin at the side of her hands.

Inderjit is madly in love with a handsome Indian boy, known as ‘goldfinger. ‘ this has obviously affected her a great deal, as she feels totally low about herself now, its almost as if she loathes herself. She is sombre and sad throughout the whole of the story, she feels as if she cannot do anything right. The male character that is the cause of, ‘Inderjits’ sadness, in this story is ‘goldfinger. ‘ He is called this as, ‘he wore rings on practically every finger. ‘

‘Chains,’ around his neck and many, gold watches. ‘ There were even rumours that his Cigarette lighter was ‘gold. ‘Goldfinger’ was very rich and his dad was said to be the, ‘richest Indian bloke in town. ‘ Goldfinger also had many girlfriends, jus like Tony. ‘Tony Kites, the arch deceiver,’ is a story written by Thomas Hardy around the nineteenth century. It is a story about how a man betrays a woman who loves him dearly and in the end, he realises jus how much the woman loves him. The story begins with Tony riding his, ‘horse and cart,’ on the way towards his house. This was the main form of transport in the days this book was written.

On the way home, he sees ‘Unity Sallet,’ one of his previous lovers. She asks him for a lift, ‘my dear Tony, will you give me a lift Prathieban Sathanathan Wider Reading Mrs Collins home? ‘ He doesn’t refuse her a lift. She then asks him many questions such as, ‘Why did ye desert me for the other one. ‘ This puts Tony on the spot, and he doesn’t know how to answer her, but instead of telling her how much he loves Milly, he plays her along by being flirtatious with her, ‘I never knowed you was so pretty before! ‘ then whilst continuing on his journey, he sees Milly.

So he tells Unity to hide in the back of the Horse drawn carriage. Then as the carriage is moving yet again, Tony sees’s another one of his past lovers- Hannah. He tells Milly that Hannah had a, ‘notion,’ to marry him, and he asks Milly to hide in the front, of the Horse and Carriage. Tony then starts talking to; Hannah and he decided that he wants her back. The carriage continues on its journey, and Tony sees his father. He asks his father for his advice. His father advises him to stick with Milly. He then makes his way back to the carriage to see all of them arguing amongst each other.

Milly and Unity both acknowledge the fact that Tony wants to marry Hannah and they want him to be happy. However Hannah’s father doesn’t want his daughter to marry Tony, and Hannah herself doesn’t want to marry him either. Tony then asks Unity to marry him she also rejects him. As a final resort he asks Milly, she accepts his proposal. This proved to Tony that Milly really did love him. ‘India’ written by Ravinder Randhaw is a story about how a boy plays girls around, and one girl is madly in love with him but cannot see through him for the type of person he really is.

He eventually gets round to noticing Inderjit, and they begin to date. Inderjit is madly in love with him but he is jus using her as another girl to add to his already large collection. This is a typical Indian love story in the form of Inderjit being madly in love with goldfinger, but also has a mixture of other cultures in it. In the end goldfinger dumps Inderjit and marries a girl, fresh from India. He has played around with many girls but at the end of the day he decided to marry a virgin from India.

This portrays how many men are, this abuse of women is wrong and this is what the author- Ravinder Randhawa is trying to portray. ‘Tony Kites The Arch Deceiver,’ written by Thomas Hardy is a pre twentieth century story. In comparison to this ‘India’ by Ravinder Randhawa is a modern day story. Hardy writes in a mixture of compound, complex and simple sentence structures to portray the theme of deceit to his audience as best as he can. In direct contrast to this Ravinder Randhawa’s, ‘India’ also has a combination of compound, complex and simple sentence structures.

By using a combination of each sentence structure, like Hardy it helps her portray the theme of deceit as best as she can to her audience. Throughout the story Hardy describes his characters in utmost detail, ”twas a little, round, firm, tight face, with a seam here and there left by the small pox, but not enough to hurt his looks in a woman’s eye, though he’d had it baddish when he was a boy. ‘ This is a description of Tony Kites, Hardy visibly describes the character for the reader to actually visualise Tony. Hardy uses description of this detail to describe many of his characters.

He uses words such as, ‘tender,’ to describe the women that Tony, deceives. By using words such as tender he makes his readers feel sorry for the woman and he also portrays the theme of deceit well. The type of language Hardy has used in this story is no longer used or recognised. He uses local dialect, ‘the tailors breeches. ‘ By using local dialect this helps create the setting of the story as well, it also helps him portray Tony Kites better to his readers. So they can judge the character themselves by reading the story. He also uses

Prathieban Sathanathan Wider Reading Mrs Collins similes; ‘she’s as sound as a bell for me, that I’ll swear! ‘ This also helps the audience create a vivid image of some essential characters in the story. ‘India,’ by Ravinder Randhawa, is written in the third person narrative. This story almost highlights the many changes in the Asian community, as fifty years ago no Asian would have dared to fall in love with anyone. Most people had arranged marriages. So this story shows the drastic changes that have occurred in the Asian society.

The girls name is, ‘Inderjit’ but the author also highlights how English people call her, ‘In-der-jit. ‘ The author is trying to point out that even Asian youths names are being changed now due to the society in which they live in, many children are also loosing the identity. Children are also changing, mainly boys as deception is become more and more common amongst the Asian race. Ravinder Randhawa writes the story using colloquial language. She uses incomplete sentences to make an impact to the readers and to portray the theme of deceit as best as she can to her readers as well.

The language in the story is mainly in the form of dialogue. Ravinder Randhawa also uses many Indian words to highlight the mixture of cultures, ‘Karma and rotis,’ are examples of this, Karma is the Indian word for fate and Rotis jus means chappatis. She also uses wonderful description such as, ‘I don’t want you sticking out like the rock of Gibraltar I said to my nose. ‘ This is excellent description of Inderjit and it helps the readers imagine what she looks like, they can be able to visualise her better after reading this.

She also uses words such as, ‘love and infatuation,’ to try and create the mood to what she wants it to be, and to highlight to the audience that Inderjit really did care a lot about Goldfinger. Both stories highlight how women are still hurt by men, even at this present day in time. ‘Tony Kites The Arch Deceiver,’ and ‘India,’ were written at different times. Both authors live in different time periods, but they still have one major theme in common- deceit. The affects of deceit can be devastating.

It could ruin peoples lives and in some cases in a way that is unfixable. Both authors have portrayed this. Tony deceives, Milly, Unity and Hannah. Goldfinger is in a different league as this character was created a long time after Tony was created. This shows that instead of getting better the problem has deteriorated dramatically. By reading both stories the audience will realise this. Although Tony is a cunning and deceitful character, he actually does care about all his girlfriends.

Goldfinger on the other hand is just after one thing, – ‘sex. Whatever happens people cant change who they fall in love with, and how they behave but stories such as these two will be sending a message out to its readers to be careful of who they fall in love with and both stories would also highlight to its readers on how much hurt someone can go through If they are deceived by a loved one. In most cases its men that deceive women, not that they don’t love them but many men jus want to have a bit of fun, as shown in the stories. Eventually Goldfinger marries a ‘virgin,’ fresh from India, after playing around with so many girls.

This shows that many men also like commitment but want to have a bit of fun before they settle down. My main reaction to both stories is that they portray the theme of deceit in a wonderful way; both stories allow its readers to become emotionally involved. The readers can actually feel the pain some characters go through when they are deceived. Both stories get their main point across, deceiving a loved one can hurt people and also break them into pieces so it must not be done. Women are still deceived by men and this is wrong it should be stopped. That is the main message both stories are trying to highlight to its readers.
