Bullying is a worldwide phenomenon that “refers to physical or psychosocial intimation intended to inflict injury or discomfort” (Kuther 1). However, if We were to consider bullies were inflicting harm to a victim, there must also be someone not stopping or even encouraging the bully to repeat the bad and incorrect behavior. Victims often are not the only ones experiencing troubles, bullies, as well face their own problem. For example, “Bullies often come from homes where physical punishment is used and encouraged daily” (Banks). This shows that bullying is almost like an inherited behavior. Inherited behavior is knowledge or behavior that a human learns from their parents or surroundings. Constant bullying is able to stay in the bully’s behavior and carry over to adulthood which negatively influences their ability to develop and maintain a positive relationship (Banks 2).
This means bullying forms a cycle of abuse and psychological torture, and that bullies are negatively affected their whole life as well. Bullies have their own set of hardships and problems that they face throughout their whole life such as a dysfunctional family and poor relationships with their spouses. Most people know that bullying can be harmful, but what remains hidden from everybody except the victim is the extent of the damage that can be done like poor self esteem and paranoia. “Students, who are victims of bullying are typically anxious, insecure, cautious, and suffer from low self esteem” (Kowalski).Once the victims have heard the insults over a period of time, the victim will start to believe them and become depressed. Excessive bullying can cause extreme depression which can lead to suicide.(Newquist) That shows that the consequences of bullying does not simply stop once the bully stops, it will still carry into their adulthood.
In conclusion, many bullies and victims may have problems that persist well after the bullying takes place. The effects of bullying will persist even after childhood and show up in awkward social behaviors in adulthood. Bullying should not be taken lightly and should be dealt with as soon as the victim or bystanders report the incident. Bullying can cause people to have low self esteem which can lead to depression then lead to suicide. Bullying could cause problems for someone for the rest of their life.
