BUFFALO, N.Y. (Aug. 28, 2012) â Located off the northern coast of Australia, of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island Resort is a spectacular island setting not known to many. However, with all of the honors garnered so far in 2012, more and more travelers are learning about this ultimate getaway location owned and operated by Delaware North Companies.
Below is the recognition garnered by Lizard Island â and its pristine beaches, luxury accommodations and variety of offerings â so far this year.
Travel + Leisure â Every year, the hospitality industry anxiously waits for Travel + Leisure to publish its âWorldâs Best Awardsâ, which are chosen by T + L readers ranking their favorite hotels, destinations, and travel companies. In 2012, Lizard Island Resort made the prestigious âBest Hotelsâ list, coming in at No. 25. The voters were clearly impressed with Delaware Northâs residences and friendly service out on the Great Barrier Reef. âOpen-plan suites are done up in the blues and whites of the sea, with hammocks and decks discreetly hidden from view,â said the article. âCount on sunset cruises, torchlight beach dinners, and a staff that will do anything to please.â
Forbes â Hayley Bosch, an editor for Forbes Travel Guide, listed Lizard Island among her âTop 10 Beach Resorts around the Worldâ in July. The Australian destination stood out to Bosch for its âseemingly untouchedâ appearance, easy access to a multitude of beaches and world-famous diving sites such as Cod Hole. Lizard Island was called out in this article with a number of other luxury resorts, including the St. Regis Bora Bora and Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.
Australian Gourmet Traveler â In the sixth year of the Australian Gourmet Traveler âTravel Awardsâ, Lizard Island was not only named readerâs choice for âBest Resort or Lodgeâ but also received the most votes of any finalist. The property learned of this honor on May 29 during a dinner at the Park Hyatt Sydney. Lizard Island Resort is also a finalist in the annual HM Awards for Hotel & Accommodation Excellence competition. The HM Awards are the leading awards for the accommodation industry in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region. This year, Lizard Island had to beat out a record 2300 entries just to make it as a finalist in the âResortâ category. The Delaware North-owned and âoperated property will find out if it is taking home the ultimate prize in its division on Sept. 7 at a gala dinner in Sydney, Australia.

Amanpulo is an exclusive island-resort in the Pamalican Island in Palawan, Philippines. It is owned by 7 Seas Resort, Inc., a joint venture between the Aboitiz, Soriano and the Aman Resorts group. The resort is majority-owned by the Aboitiz and Soriano group and minority-owned by the Aman Resorts. The Philippine Constitution does not allow 100% ownership of foreigners on businesses in the Philippines. The name Amanpulo came from Aman which is Sanskrit for peace and pulo means island in Tag-alog. The twinning of the two words results in the coining of “Amanpulo âorâ Peace Island in reference to the tranquil island of Pamalican.
Facilities
Airstrip
Access to the resort from Manila is through Ninoy Aquino International Airport where private charter airlines operate. The resort however is serviced by Island Aviation of the Soriano group. Private charter airline may however provide flight to the island through its private airstrip.
Villas and Casitas
The resort has luxurious villas and casitas for visitors, each with its own buggy for hopping on the island.
Popularity
The resort is popularly perceived as an expensive holiday destination exclusively for the elite travelers such as celebrities, businessmen, and politicians who wants total privacy on their vacations. Stars like Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Robert De Niro have been reported to be on the resort. Resort management however, never confirm such reports though air transport officials would only say that international celebrities and well known businessmen fly to the private resort without confirming their names. The resort grabbed media attention when a construction worker died on the barracks of the resort and was flown to Manila without clearance and coordination from authorities. The resort refused to issue official statements on the incident. The media frenzy died without a clear picture of what had happened on the victim.
