FINDINGS
1. Poverty is the main cause of juvenile delinquency within the community of Manley Meadows. 2. The major deviant activity conducted by these juveniles is robbery 3. The juvenile delinquents engage in robbery mostly at nights.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The researcher suggests that the Manley Meadows citizen association establishes Neighborhood Watch. The residents should choose or elect a leader for their neighborhood watch and get the Police department involved to discuss crime prevention strategies and to assist residents in carrying out safety audits and developing action plan. The Neighborhood Watch could also request from the police station that the Police carry out regular patrol at nights which the researcher indicated is the time of day the juvenile delinquents tends to carry out their illicit activities. The Neighborhood Watch/Citizen Association could hold regular meetings and keep the community informed through newsletters/flyers. The Community Safety Unit in the Jamaica Constabulary Force in charge of the Police Youth Clubs could establish a Police Youth Club in the community. This club could meet once per week and parents of the youth should ensure that their
children become involved as this would help to foster effective communication with peers and keep their minds occupied with extra curricula activities such as netball, football and basket ball. The researchers suggested that these protective programmes and activities be implemented immediately with assistance from the Neighborhood Watch Committee, the Citizen Association Committee as well as the Government. These forms of actions would greatly reduce the level of crime and violence (and in essence juvenile delinquency) which will make the community a safer place to live.
