A library is a collection of books, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. The term “library” has itself acquired a secondary meaning: “a collection of useful material for common use,” and in this sense is used in fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, electronics and biology.

This research is intended for public, institutions and researchers’, use as their resourceful information. In particular, this study will help the library personnel or the librarian in monitoring the books accurately. Further, the use of cataloguing will be made easier through an advance system provided by this study.

The librarian is encountering problems in doing transactions like borrowing books, checking the availability of books, returning and accessioning of books because all the transactions are being done manually. The process is time consuming.

The proponents decided to proposed this system to help Bangkal High School enhance the daily transaction in library. This proposed system will provide their library a computerized system making it more organized and easy to access. The advantage of this study is to make their current system more effective and efficient.

This computerized library system is a transaction processing system (TPS) that will provide a convenient cataloguing, inventory, monitoring, accessioning, borrowing, returning, security and retrieving of records.

Bangkal High School is located at Gen. Malvar cor Apolinario Sts., Bangkal, Makati City. The institution is a public school that has more than 3,000 students and almost 65 percent of these students are using the library. The school’s library has more than 5,000 books with more than 1,000 book titles. In keeping track of books, the librarians are used in manually writing the books. Specifically, the librarian is required to write down all the book information in the accessioned journal and create an accession number. The accessioned journal contains the needed book information like book title, author, and publisher, place of publication, subject, and category. The manual process of accessioning is a difficult task for the library personnel.

In borrowing books, the students should present a copy of their Library Card to the librarian along with the books they want to borrow. The borrower is obliged to sign and write his/her complete name on the card placed in the book pocket at the back of the book. A borrower can only borrow maximum of two books at a time. In checking of the availability of books, the librarian would first manually scan the accessioned journal if the book title is acquired by the institution, then the library personnel would verify the shelves according to the category of the book.

With regard to borrowed books, borrowers should return books on or before the due date. If the borrower has exceeded the due date, a penalty of five peso per day will be applied. To compute the penalties for delinquent borrowers, the library personnel checks the date the book was borrowed then he or she computes manually for the total amount of penalty that the borrowers will pay. Each day that the borrower exceeds is counted as five peso. Then, in paying for the penalty, the borrower must present the copy of his or her library card to the librarian to check the total amount of penalty. The student will pay straight to the librarian.

In case of lost books, the librarian will identify the book information and the librarian will ask the borrowers if they want to donate a book to replace the lost book. For damaged books, the librarian should be the one to fix them.

In generating the reports like accessioning, cataloguing, penalty of overdue books, returned books, and reports on newly acquired books are manually created through hand written or manually typing the reports in the computer. This process consumes a lot of time.

These tasks and procedures are considered tedious. In this generation, everything is improved to be concurrent with the new technology. Thus, this paper aims to provide a system that will improve the library of Bangkal High School.
