The level of learning a student has in academics can be determined by the grades a students earns for a period of learning has been done. It is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. If a student earns high grades it is concluded that he or she may also have learned a lot while low grades indicate lesser learning. However, many experiences and studies found out there are also several factors that would account for the grades. No single factor can be definitely pointed out as predicting grades. It has been an interplay of so many factors – gender, IQ, study habits, age, year level, parent’s educational attainment, social status, number of siblings, birth order, etc. In fact, almost all of existing environmental and personal factors are a variable of academic performance. However, at this point in time, we would like to investigate the possible relationship of study habits and the factors affecting it to the academic achievement of the selected Third Year students in Blessed Mary Academy.

Success in any school depends heavily on how well they know how to study. In this study, we also want to help them develop good study skills and good habits in order to make the best use of their study time. Any skill they gain is a habit. Indeed, all learning is acquiring a habit. How is it that some students easily manage their study time while others cram hopelessly at the last minute? The answer is simple. People who manage their time and study habits wisely will plan well ahead to make it easier on themselves. The investigation on this area thus becomes a real compelling motivation for us to conduct this study.

The Independent variables are the factors affecting the dependent variable.

Statement of the problem

This study is intended to find out the factors affecting the study habits of the Third Year

students in Blessed Mary Academy.

It also aimed to answer the following questions:

1. What extent of influence did the independent variables like time management have on students academic performance?

2. Did the independent variables significantly influence students academic performance?

Significance of the Study

The researchers believe that students, particularly the Third Year students in Blessed

Mary Academy will benefit from the findings of this study since it provides basis for awareness

and better understanding of how their current study habits affect their academic performance.

Likewise it gives them a more focused and clear perspective on how the specific behaviors related to their studies influenced study habits. Consequently, this awareness also gives a much deeper understanding of their selves as students considering that the college life is typically the point of all developmental adjustment demands.

Scope and Delimitation

The study focuses on the effects of study habits to the academic performance of the selected Third Year students. Its objective is to show the relativity of the students study habits with its grade. The limitation of this research is that only those selected students in third year level can participate in this research.

Definition of Terms

The researchers defined the following terms based on the study’s perspective.

1) Study Habits- In this study this word refers to what the student does at home or in school to facilitate the completion of an assignment or a project, to enhance/facilitate learning for his personal growth or towards the academic performance.

2) Skills- This refers to anything an individual has learned to do with ease and precision, may be either physically or mentally performed.

3) Develop- In this study, this refers on how the study habits of selected Third Year students in Blessed Mary Academy grow and expand an improved manner.

4) Academic performance- This word refers to how students deal with their studies and how they cope with or accomplish different task give to them by the teachers.
5) Student- In this research study, it refers to our respondents and was being categorized specifically as the selected Third Year students.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the wealth of literature and studies, gathered from books, journals, and other related literatures that are relevant to this research study. According to Mcknight (2006) in his study about habits, he explained that habits are formed through repetition. Once formed, habits are difficult to break and it is formed when we are young and are likely to stay with us in all our lives. It requires experiences whether they may bad or may be good. Sometimes, it may refer also as a routine of a person as he or she lives his or her life. Habits are being chosen and not something that happens without a reason. As for the study habit specifically, it has to be processed and developed in order to come up with a good one. It is not easy for students especially those who are not consistent with what they are doing to develop their study habit because it requires consistency and persistence in order to let one’s study habit stay in our lives. Attaining one’s ideal study habit is along-way process. In addition, there exists another study that gives up a brief trivia about study habit.

This is according to Pogue (2000) who said that more than thirty years ago, students fail because they do not know how to study even until today. This best advice that Pogue can give us is to develop sound study skills. Students did not get the right techniques and strategies in studying and their attentions were focused more on other things that pleases them more. According to Kizlik (2012) study skills depends on one thing, and that is your willingness to improve and do well in school. If you really don’t want to make the effort and sacrifice, no amount of suggestions, ideas, or outlines can help you. You are the one who is responsible for your education, and effective study skills can help you just like what Mangrum (2009) said “Successful students have good study habits”.

They apply these habits to all their classes, work to develop any study skills you don’t have in that way you can improve as a better student you can be. According to Effexis (2011) time management is an important skill for students because they typically need to juggle many different activities in a rather unstructured environment moreover, Grohol (2006) stated that students grapple with many issues in their lives, and because of all these compelling things getting their attention, It’s hard to concentrate on studying and yet if you’re in school you have to do atleast a little studying in order to progress from year to year. The key to effective studying isn’t cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter. In further explanation about this statement Rodgers (2011) explains that when you manage study time properly you will actually find that you have more time for the things you would rather do. An organized approach to studying makes learning happen faster and helps you remember what you need to know better.
