In the article “If I Were a Poor Black Kid” Gene Marks, the author, offers steps to solve the problem that black people face with education. He emphasizes that good grades, studying really hard, going to a good school and taking advantage of every learning opportunity is the key to success. He gives a wide range of ways to find resources and to find all the help needed. Although Marks is not a poor black kid, he knows that inequality is true and understands that things are harder for them. He explains in every way how success is achievable through technology, guidance, and good grades. Poor black kids have all the opportunities to succeed if they would take advantage of resources available for them.

In the article Marks emphasizes the importance of access to technology for the purpose of learning. As Marks claims that computers can be purchased cheap from Dell and Tiger outlets. Also, he touches on various websites that can help students with scholarships and assistance. Mark pronounces “I would take advantage of study websites like Ever Notes, Study Rails, Flashcard Machine, Quizlet and free online calculators.” Marks assumption is true because in my urban community there are libraries and various after school programs that allow students to use for free. Also the community centers post flyers around the town in Camden NJ every year, my parents were actually granted a free used computer with internet access for one month about 2 years ago.

These resources are free and there shouldn’t be any excuses as to why a student cannot access them. Even if some parents could not afford computers there are always computers in schools, afterschool programs, and libraries. It is obvious that access to quality education can open up the door to exceptional opportunities for any student. As Marks explains that, “Most private schools are filled to the brim with 1%.” This is due to the expenses of these private schools that it makes poor black kids harder to get into these schools but opportunities are still available.

Mark is correct in the fact that it is attainable, through help of the board of trustees, different scholarships and etc. A student who gets good grades will have access to Magnet, Charter and Private schools. “If I was a poor black kid I would make it my goal to get into one of these schools”, Marks declares. Having the chance to attend a private school opens the doors to students. Not only is their education considered among the best but they have the resources for students to achieve their best. In consequence one must continue to connect with guidance counselors and other resources. Students who have the basic skills will be successful.

More importantly look for guidance in exploring college and career options. I agree with Mark because I had a great relationship with my counselor in high school and I believe if it wasn’t for her, I would have never studied abroad, had the opportunities to volunteer in my community, and most importantly had the chance to attend Rowan University. She has guided me in such a great direction that I would encourage everyone to connect with their counselors and continue to seek assistance. Also these counselors can help secure positions with employment or internships.

Even Marks agrees when he declares, “This is the person who will know everything there is to know about financial aid, grants, minority program and the like.” However, these students must continue to work hard to achieve success and it is their job to reach out for support. Resources are available for every poor black kid in this society. Even though they may have to seek more assistance and work a little harder.

A middle class white boy and a poor black kid can both have the same opportunities. Mark at the end of his excerpt states, “Technology can help these kids. But only if the kids want to be helped.” Yes, there is much inequality. But the opportunity is still there in this country for those that are smart enough to go for it.” There are several of online resources, counselors and etc. to guide them in the journey as Mark proclaims. Therefore if these students concentrate on their technical, reading and writing skills, they will have professional success.
