Chapter 1
Introduction
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Study skills and habits are critical to academic success. But in some way, we paid little attention to the way on how honoured students study. According to Al-Hilawani & Sartawi, (1997), Study skills and habits are which necessary for understanding and retrieving information, and in particular they are the link between comprehension and memorization. This statement emphasized the most necessary way of learning of students especially to honors. Hoover indicates that good study skills and habits are the tools that assist students during the learning process in order to acquire and retain new information and are essential for students’ successful performance. We can generally say that honored students performed effective study habits which can we substitute the way the habits of slow learner students.
A report from Jones Slate and Kyle (1992) that the honored students have better skills and habits than low achieving students, and performs in areas of good time management, study techniques and attitudes toward learning. But some prospects of achieving this goal, is to operate such pressure on itself. They can’t easily gain knowledge without painstaking situation inside and outside the classroom.
In order to become effective independent learners in today’s changing academic environment, some have suggested that what is important is not so much what students are doing within the classroom but what are the students doing outside of the classroom, particularly in terms of their study methods and study behaviors (Entwistle et al., 1991). Mainly, the other factors of achieving students, is the standard of living of the family, the student-teacher relationship, their attitudes, the support and resources for their study, and the social interactions from the environment. Fielden (2004) states that good study habits, help the student in critical reflection in skills outcomes such as selecting, analysing, critiquing and synthesizing.
The often missing of this research is the voice of the students themselves regarding if their effective study habits that achieves academically. This research aims to determine the often habits, the resources specially the new technologies are often seen as having the potential to dramatically improve time on task for students themselves must ultimately reign in on what tools have worked for them, their standard of living and other specific tools to conduct this study. This context provides also the right study habits and way for the low achieving students.
