The Main Functions of the DHS and the FEMA

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are two government organizations that are responsible for delivering various forms of services to the people. The DHS, which was created through the Homeland Security Act of 2002, is basically an executive department of the United States whose main role is to prevent and thwart terrorist attacks to the country (Department of Homeland Security, 2008). On the other hand, the FEMA is part of the DHS whose primary mission is to protect the country from all kinds of hazards, such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks, and reduce the loss of property and life in case these hazards occur (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2008).

            Both the DHS and FEMA played prominent roles in restoring the areas that were ravaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2004. The FEMA together with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), leased real estate properties owned by the HUD to 10,000 displaced families (Department of Homeland Security, 2008).

In addition, following the massive devastation brought about by the two hurricanes, the DHS and the FEMA have intensified their hurricane awareness and preparedness drive in order to minimize casualties and damages to property. Ever since the hurricanes struck, the DHS and the FEMA, have significantly increased the country’s stockpiles of relief supplies, implemented extensive disaster plans, and instilled a sense of awareness among the people (White House, 2007).

            In this regard, it can be deduced that both organizations have fulfilled their duties of ensuring the safety of the nations against disasters and terrorist attacks. Moreover, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, it is safe to say that the DHS has constantly maintained a safe environment as shown in its various security measures and in its preparedness against future possible terrorist attacks.
