Outcome 1: Understand what is required foe good practice in adult social care roles. 1.1 Identify standards that influence the way adult social care job roles are carried out. Care Standards Act (2000)

Domiciliary Care Regulations (2002)
Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)
Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992)

1.2 Explain why reflecting on work activities is an important way to develop your own knowledge and skills. Reflecting on work activities is an important way of developing one’s knowledge and skills as it helps one ascertain who tasks they need more practise on in order to improve the overall care given to the clients. 1.3 Describe ways to ensure that personal attitudes or beliefs do not obstruct the quality of work. Refrain from discussing sensitive subjects such as; religious beliefs with clients. Respect the client’s wishes and perform the tasks that they need help with to their specifications not how you feel the tasks should be carried out. You should not impose your own beliefs and morals on other colleagues or clients. Do not let outside influences affect the way in which you relate to others or provide services to the clients.

Outcome 2: Understand how learning activities can develop knowledge, skills and understanding. 2.1 Describe how a learning activity has improved your own knowledge, skills and understanding. During a training session I learnt of the SPECAL method to treat dementia and aid in dementia management by the care providers and family members. SPECAL method sees our memory system as a photograph album and each of our individual memories as photographs stored in our album. Photographs are arriving all the time in our album, providing us with information about the facts of what we have just been doing and how we felt about it. SPECAL sense recognises that the client may not know the facts of what has just happened in their life. SPECAL sense immediately reduces stress for the person with dementia and everyone around them by using the three golden rules: don’t ask direct questions; listen to the expert – the person with dementia and learn from them; don’t contradict.

SPECAL sense has improved my understanding on how dementia affects the sufferers’ memory and what is the best possible way to relate to them and ensure that they are receiving the vest possible care without causing them anymore distress. 2.2 Describe how reflecting on a situation has improved your own knowledge, skills and understanding. During a manual handling training session, I had the opportunity to learn a more updated way of moving and repositioning clients using the sliding sheet. Practising this new method not only enable to learn a new valuable skill, it also minimises the client’s discomfort the new movement technique was more effective also gave me a chance to enhance my knowledge as I have since shown other care workers how to use this method and this in turn has improved my confidence level in carrying out such tasks in the future.

2.3 Describe how feedback from others has developed your own knowledge, skills and understanding. Feedback from others has developed my own knowledge, skills and understanding as it has highlighted the areas that need to be improved on. For example, how to act and respond during emergency situations; recently I had a client have a fall. I had to call the emergency services and explain the situation to them, I also learnt how important it is to reassure the client that everything is going to be okay and inform them about what is happening. From this situation I learnt how to effectively respond and react when such situations occur like, not panicking and calling the emergency services promptly and informing the company of the situation as soon as possible.

Outcome 3: Know how a personal development plan can contribute to your own learning and development. 3.1 Define the term ‘personal development plan’. A personal development plan is an action plan based on awareness, values, reflection, goal-setting and planning for personal development and improvement/progression within the context of a career, education, relationship or for self-improvement. 3.2 Identify who could be involved in the personal development plan process. Line manager

Qualification Assessor
Senior Care Manager
More experienced colleagues
3.3 Identify sources of support for your own learning and development. Team meetings and discussions.
Having access to training either internally or externally.
Sharing information and asking colleagues and other health professionals questions. Observing and working in partnership with colleagues and other professionals. 3.4 List the benefits of using a personal development plan to identify ongoing improvements in your own knowledge and understanding. A personal development plan would be beneficial in identifying ongoing improvements in one’s knowledge and understanding as it would highlight what aspects the individual needs to concentrate in order to try and reach their career or personal goals. Personal development plans are also beneficial as they let the individual know all the possible sources of information and help that will aid the improvement of their knowledge and understanding and how and when this information can be accessed by the individual. Personal development also allow the individual to create a timescale in which they aim to achieve their goals, this time constraint can help in the process of on-going improvements in knowledge and understanding as it will spur the individual to seek help in order to progress within their given career.
