Is the electric car the car the future?

The main reason to buy an electrical car is the reduced CO2 emission. Reducing pollution coming from cars is a great way to fight global warming. It’s not only less pollution it also costs less. Each kilometer you drive in an electric car costs considerably less than with a comparable fuel car. The motor of an electric car also has a great advantage point with its speed. Electrical engines have a one gear box motor, it doesn’t have to shift gears. This means you have the full capacity of the motor at any given time. The engines are small and require little to no maintenance. That is why you almost never have to go to a garage. No more fuel filters and oil changes.

There are nonetheless a few drawbacks to electric cars; the range and charging time. You can find a wide variety of distances an electrical car can make. Most of them are less than 160 km witch is more than people travel on a regular basis. Some can go up to 420 km but sometimes people need more. Especially if your destination doesn’t have charging port, you’ll have to be able to drive back to a charging station (witch aren’t always easy to find) or back home. Charging an electric car can sometimes take a lot of time. You can install better charging ports at your home but this will also come with a price. The market for electric cars isn’t very developed. You have a wide variety of choices and brands for diesel and petrol cars. There will not always be an equivalent of what you are looking for in electric cars.

Supporters say an electric car is good for the environment, but is that really true? Studies have shown 2 main pollution problems with electric cars: electricity and batteries. If your electricity were produced by green energy this wouldn’t be a problem. But mostly the energy of your home is only partially green. Electricity is also often produced with coal; this means that your car wouldn’t help the fight against global warming at all. Lithium –ion batteries, which are the best performing at this time, struggle with the short supply of lithium and the fact that this lightweight metal is highly flammable. Batteries are also a big concern in terms of pollution.
