Despite our society in these days shows a huge difference between the rich and the poor, I decided to compared to developing countries and non-developing countries. The aim of this paper is to compare the Education System; history, tuition fees, literacy rate, problems, and international students of the United States of America and the Republic of the Philippines. In 1600, the settlement of the New England introduced the public education in United States while Philippines is known as one of the most initiated country in Asia. This is because during the colony of the Spain, it has its traditional oldest university, colleges, vocational school and the world’s first modern public school education system. We could clearly see that the colonization has the huge influence in the education of the United States and the Philippines.

Although elementary grade is required, recent official statistics illustrates that 27.82 percent of children who have not attend or finished elementary schools are still exist in the United States and the Philippines, The United States’ average tuition fees for colleges and universities in public schools are more than 51 dollars while in the Philippines’ average tuition fees are about 69,95 peso or 3,216 dollars (public school).But on the other hand, even though most of the students in America has been successfully complete his or her education, there are still problems in employment. Regarding the statistic of 2010, untenured rate shows 10.8 percent for high school students and for college or university graduates are 4.9 percent.

In contrast, the latest statistic data shows a great fluctuation in employment of the Philippines. On January 2010, the employment rate increases its number up to 97.2 percent and the unemployment rate decrease up to 7.3percent. According to Jack R. Students should be given a chance to know about American racism and segregation and effect in the community that we have been facing until now.

I think the key to equality is to show each student the importance of cooperation and interaction with one another. Based on the estimation of the Michigan University, “intergroup relations showed that the program helped white students develop a greater sense of shared values and interests with people of color, white students of color perceived less racial divisiveness and reported more positive interactions with white students.” The main meaning of doing this report is to give the students a wide variety of perspectives and opportunities to not only knowing the meaning of discrimination but also feeling that working together with different kind of students is essential in our lives. Although Philippines has accomplished huge success in educational rate, there is still many problems that they should confront. According to value toward the education has been decreasing dramatically for twenty five years.

In 1990, University of the Philippines (UP) made a survey about the decreasing number of UP education. Most students anticipated that it might have be the value towards the education and the professors’ insufficient way of teaching. However, as the result, majority said it is the shortage of parking space. But on the other hand, one of the students in University of the Philippines said that “the quality of education” must be the greatest problem that the students’ of the Philippines are facing these days. This is because numerous number of students felt that curriculum offered by DepEd (the Department of Education) and CHED( the Commission of the Higher Education) is still inadequate to undergo in the “modern world”.Furthermore, he thinks that the key to solve this problem is in our hands. He suggests that cooperation is the huge key in the quality of education in the Philippines. When I read this article, I was enlightened by his words because instead of blaming the government, he suggests that working together is the key in the education which I myself also think it is.

In addition, I believe that his way of thinking is indispensable in not only in the education system of the Philippine but also around the world. Years after years, the number of literacy rate in United States has been raising its number. According to the NAAL (National Assessment of Adult Literacy) “administered test which revealed that an estimate fourteen percent of US residents would have extreme difficulty with reading and written comprehension which can be defined as illiterate”. As a result, many people are suffering finding a job and increasing the number of unemployed citizens. Conversely, of the entire literacy rate in the world, the United States and Philippines are close in number that United State is 99.00percent and the Philippines is 93.4 percent. Additionally, both countries are inclining its number of literacy rate. As I am studying in Sophia University, which provides multicultural environment, I am always curious about the international students in foreign countries.

Two years ago, the Open Door or what we called Institution of the International Education, which maintains the international students in United States, stated that 671,616 student came from other countries to study in America.Indian has the highest number with 83,833students. According to the newest data of foreign students in 2000 to 2001 in the Philippines, over 2,323 students are studying there. The leading nation studying in the Philippines are American which are 452 or 149.45 percent. However, students who studies overseas are deteriorating because of students’ visas problem. I believe that international students are expected to contribute in our society. Not that there are from the foreign countries but that the fact that they encounter a chance to meet different cultures and tradition. All in all, although both countries: United State and the Philippines are continuing in dealing with the education obstacles, both nations get along with the education system to be more developed that could help students to be successful in their lives and reach their dreams in the future.
