I. Introduction
The history of human race has also been a history of drug use. Since earliest times, herbs, roots, bark, leaves and plants have been used to relieve pain and help control disease. In and of itself, the use of drugs does not constitute an evil; drugs, properly administered, have been a medical blessing. Unfortunately, certain drugs also initially produce enticing side-effects, such as a feeling of euphoria, a sense of ”feeling good”, elation serenity and power. What began as something of a recreational activity evolved in time into a problem of dependence and abuse.
Over the past decades, the use of illegal drugs has spread at an unprecedented rate and has reached every part of the globe. No nation has been immune to the devasting problems caused by drug abuse. At the same time, a broad spectrum of the world community has demonstrated intense concern over the problem: the insidious long-term effects of chronic drug use and its import on the user, the fami, the community, and on society. Reasons for this concern include related increases in crime, drug related automobile accidents, those which take place on the job, learning disabilities and other mental health problems, family disruption, and health problems, including interference with normal reproductive functions and long-term damge to the brain, heart and lungs.
The scope of the narcortics problem today has only began to be known. There is no longer any question as the social consequences of widespread drug abuse. The evidence is everywhere. Drug abuse is no longer considered a “victimless” crime. It is a crime that imposes a straggering burden on the people and the nations of the world. It is burden no society can afford, to carry.
The illicit production, distribution and consumption of drugs have intimidated and corrupted public servants, and hve even destabilized goverments. The erratic ebb and flow and sheer volume of “drug money” have affected the money supply and exchange markets.

C. Significance of study :
There are many, many reasons that people study the nature of drug and alcohol addiction. Probably the main reason that people study addiction is because it has touched them somehow. Usually they have been affected by it personally or even a close family member or friend. Or other times it might just be someone that has a desire to learn about addiction. I have heard that it takes a very special person to even want to become a addiction counselor or work in the field of addiction studies. It takes someone with a lot of heart and compassion. Substance abuse is a very serious problem in the world today. Studying addiction can help people learn ways to try to better society as a whole. It can be a very interesting subject, and is usually Psychology based.
