1 Describe what having equal opportunity means in relation to each of the following topics.

a) Education:

All Children whether male or female, disabled or not should have the right to reach his/her highest potential. Every child should have the opportunity to use the same methods and choose any study they want.

b) Housing:

Councils aim to ensure that every applicant is not treated less favourably than any other because of race, gender, disability, religion or age.

c) Health care:

Health care cannot refuse access to anyone because of race, gender, disability, religion or age.

d) Employment:

Employers must give everyone the same opportunity to better their lives no matter what their race, gender, disability, religion or age is. They must provide disabled access when required.

a) Outline some of the problems that persist in the UK in relation to the levels of pay between men and women.

• Women earn less money than men.

• More women apply for lower paid jobs.

• Some women can earn less pay than a man doing the same job.

b) Choose two other signs of inequality and outline the problems that persist in the UK in relation to them.

i. Young people not been allowed in a shop unless accompanied by an adult.

ii. Physically disabled people not having access to goods and services because of no access to get into a shop.

1 Describe the individual factors that make a person who they are, by providing examples of each of the following factors.

a) Physical characteristics are what you look like, for example height, weight, eye/hair colour, sex, age and your skin colour.

b) Emotions are what you feel, for example happy, sad, angry, fear, sorrow, love.

c) Like and Dislike can be personnel, but can also be shared by other, for example I like watching Eastenders my son doesn’t he likes watching his cartoons I don’t but we both love to watch CSI.

d) Values and beliefs can also be personnel and shared by other, for example religion some people are Christian some aren’t. Values can be something you feel is worth something to you.

A) Provide examples of personal interests to show how someone might describe
themselves.

Personal interests could different groups, for example Charities or Leisure groups.

b) Provide examples of personal characteristics to show how someone might describe themselves.

Personnel characteristics could be describing themselves by sexual orientation or by their abilities to do activities.

c) Provide examples of religious and cultural characteristics to show how someone might describe themselves.

Examples of religious and cultural characteristics are set on your beliefs, e.g. Christian, Hindu or Jewish etc..

e) Provide examples of geographic characteristics to show how someone might describe themselves.

Examples of geographic characteristics is how people describe themselves from where they live, e.g. ‘Geordies’ are people from Newcastle.

3 Explain what is meant by the following terms by completing the sentences

a) Dual discrimination means to bully or discriminate against someone for more then one reason for example if someone was a Christian and also disabled.

b) Positive discrimination means to employ someone on the basis of protected characteristics to raise the number of under-represented in a group.

c) Discrimination arising from disability means to discriminate against someone because of his/her disability.

d) Discrimination by association means to be discriminated against because of some else who you are associated with, for example if someone related to me was in prison I may be bullied because of that.

e) Protected characteristics means to be discriminated against because of personal or social characteristics, for example age, sexual orientation or religion.

a) Make clear what it means to have multiple identities.

To have multiple identities means for me to be a mother but also volunteer, so I can tell people that I can be two different things.

b) Give three examples from people you know, but not yourself, to illustrate your explanation of multiple identities.

1) a woman who is a mother, works, white, 45 years old and is a Christian.

2) a man, black, single, works, 30 years old and has no religion.

3) a woman, white, single, no children, doesn’t work and is Jewish.

5 Explain how an individual can identify themselves as belonging to a number of different groups.

I volunteer at Willington Community Action Centre, I do this because I care about the community and like to help out were best I can. I decided to volunteer here as its close to home and it gets me involved with different activities within the community.

6 Give two examples of how an individual can identify themselves as belonging to a number of different groups.

i. Paul is in the local football team but also sings in the local choir.

ii. Christine goes to a computer class and also enjoys the gym.

7 Write a description of yourself in terms of your own multiple identities.

I am a female, a mother, a daughter, an aunty, white, 30years old, doesn’t work but volunteers and I have no religion.

Assessment 1.3 Understand what diversity means

1 Identify the types of diversity that exist within your local community by giving examples of the different:

a) Interests: Clubs and Societies, for example football clubs, crocket clubs, library and churches.

B) Beliefs: Places of worship, for example, Catholicism Church, Pentecostal Church, Methodist Church and the Church Of England.

c) Ages: Shops for example different shops sell different thing for babies, teenagers and adults.

d) Lifestyles: Takeaways, for example, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Cantonese and fish and chip shop.

e) Characteristics (for example, geographic, cultural or personal): walking around and observing what people are wearing, allows me to analyse where they may be going, for example if someone was in shorts and t-shirt they could be going to the gym or out for a run.

2 Describe the contribution you make to the overall diversity of your local community. You should explain how you contribute and give 2 examples.

I attend an annual council meeting which allows me to have my say in how the council should spend funding. I also volunteer at my local resource centre and I deliver posters and leaflets to local shops displaying different activities the centre is doing.

3 Illustrate the value of diversity by giving two examples of how it enhances each of the following areas:

a) Your own Life:

i. I am a member of my local gym and go at least once a week.

ii. I enjoy ordering from my local Indian once a week.

b) Your local community:

i. The community fare is held once a year in the summer, a range of different groups gather to enjoy and stare the day with each other.

ii. Different Churches hold different events such as coffee mornings and the local Methodist church hold give blood days in their hall.

c) The country you live in

i. People attend University and College in the country.

ii. Musical Festivals are held from all over this country and others.

4 Describe what it means to respect other peoples differences

By allowing others to express their beliefs and opinions and for us to understand that others may differ from our own.

Assessment 1.4 Understand stereotyping and labelling and their effects

1 Give definitions of the terms ‘stereotyping and ‘labelling’ by completing the following sentences.

a) Stereotyping means to group people base on one or more characteristics or assumptions.

b) Labelling means to label people and putting them in certain groups.

2 Explain why some people feel the need to stereotype others

They do this to make themselves more comfortable with their actions.

3 Provide 2 examples of stereotypes and state what the damaging effects of each might be.

a) People who don’t work are stereotyped as been lazy, this could destroy their self-esteem and make it harder for them to get back to work.

b) Disabled people are stereotyped as not been able to do a job as good as someone who isn’t disabled and this could make it harder for them to apply for jobs.

4 a) Describe how stereotyping is maintained in society.

Through images and messages in the media, television, advertising and posters.

b) Give two examples of stereotypes and say how they are maintained and perpetuated in society.

i. Women are to be receptionist ad mean are to do more manual work, because men are supposed to be stronger them women, this then leads to women getting paid less.

ii. People with different accents have different stereotypes, for example Irish are thick and Geordies and hooligans.

Assessment 1.5 Understand prejudice and discrimination and their effects.

1 Give definitions for the terms ‘prejudices’ and ‘discrimination’ by completing the sentences below.

a) Prejudice means is judging someone by what you see, rather than who they are.

b) Discrimination means prejudicial treatment on groups or people because of their race, colour of skin, beliefs, age or sex.

2 Describe how people may develop prejudices

They may develop prejudices because of the people they associate with, influencing their opinions on different people and groups.

3 Describe the types of discrimination that can exist.

Discrimination that can exist include:

• Age – treating someone less favourably because of their age.

• Disability – treating them unfairly because of their disability.

• Race/Colour – treating them different because of the where they are from or the colour of their skin

4 Make clear the differences between indirect and direct discrimination

• Direct discrimination is when people are treated less favourable because of personal characteristics

• Indirect discrimination is where there are policies and procedures that puts a group of people at a disadvantage.

b) Provide two different examples to illustrate the differences.

i. Direct Discrimination – 2 employees do the same thing wrong and only 1 employee receives discipline.

ii. Indirect Discrimination – where an employer has a policy where he only employees people of a certain age.

5 Explain the term ‘multiple discrimination’.

Multiple discrimination is where someone discriminates against someone else for more than just one reason.

6 Describe the effects that discrimination and prejudice can have on people.

The effects could be, low self-esteem, no confidence, it could affect the persons social or work life and could also cause problems with career opportunities.
