Cosmetic Surgery Is Mere Vanity

We all remember the famous line ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of all’ from Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. In the story Snow White’s vain stepmother wishes to be declared the most beautiful women in the world.

Vanity is basically excessive pride in ones appearance, abilities or qualities. Pride and ego are two of the major reasons for existence of vanity. People can cross any limit and brake barriers to protect there pride and ego getting hurt. Cosmetic surgery gives people a way to take pride in them and preoccupies them in enhancing their appearances. They don’t even pay heed to problems that cosmetic surgery may bring in to their lives. Recent studies have shown people who undergo cosmetic surgery may face psychological disorders and have tendencies to commit suicide. Women who had breast augmentation done are quite likely to be at risk of committing suicide. Another disorder linked to cosmetic surgeries is Body Dimorphic Disorder (BDD); people suffering from the disorder suffer from distress and depression. They may also become functionally impaired. People may turn to drug abuse to cope with disorders and depression. Preoperative assessments of patients reveal, about 44 to 50% clinical depression, 70% anxiety, 20% substance abuse and about 23 to 29% attempted suicide.

Despite all this there is an alarming increase in number of people getting cosmetic surgeries done. From old-aged to middle-aged people and even teenagers are getting cosmetic surgeries done. The increasing trend of cosmetic surgeries among young people is due subjective negative impression of themselves. Young people tend to develop defense mechanisms to deal with there low self-esteem. In there later life they may tend to seek cosmetic surgery even for a perceived abnormality in their appearance.
