Have you ever thought about how many times you’ve skipped breakfast? During a busy morning, it’s easy not to consider breakfast as a priority, but taking just a few minutes to have something to eat can really make a difference to your day. After this speech, I am sure of all of you “breakfast skippers” will reflect on the importance of breakfast and consider the possibility to change your nutrition lifestyle. Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel. Without breakfast, you are effectively running on empty, like trying to start the car with no petrol! Apart from providing us with energy, breakfast foods are good sources of important nutrients such as calcium, iron and B vitamins as well as protein and fibre. There are a wide range of breakfast foods, such as cereals, fruit juice, eggs, milk, yoghurt, eggs, bacon etc. The body needs these essential nutrients and studies show that if these are missed at breakfast, they are less likely to be compensated for later in the day.
Other research show that those who have breakfast regularly are less likely to be overweight and are more likely to be within their ideal weight range. If you skip breakfast, you’re more likely to reach for high sugar and fatty snacks mid-morning. You decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 5% for each day of the week that you eat breakfast. Eating breakfast can improve memory and concentration levels. You can raise your productivity levels by 20% if you eat good carbs in the morning, according to 2005 study by International Labour Organization. You may be sceptic about all this information, studies and research I’m providing so I’m prepared to give you my personal experience. I used to be a breakfast skipper.
Until the 8th grade, I would go to school without eating anything and I had to wait until the big break at 10:30 to have “late breakfast”. I used to say that I was busy in the morning so there was no time for breakfast. But then I started suffering from headache, and it was weird cause this headache started in the morning, right after the first lesson. I went to a doctor and he advised me to have breakfast regularly because this was the main cause I suffered from this kind of chronic headache at such an early age. I thought: “there’s nothing to lose if I give it a try”. I started waking up a bit earlier and since then, I have breakfast regularly.
