* Diversity: Diversity literally means difference. Diversity recognises that though people have things in common with each other, they are also different and unique in many ways. Diversity is about recognising and valuing those differences. Diversity therefore consists of visible and non-visible factors, which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality and work-style in addition to the characteristics that are protected under discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion and belief, sexual orientation and age.By recognising and understanding our individual differences and embracing them, and moving beyond simple tolerance, we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued. * Equality: Equality means treating people in a way that is appropriate for their needs.

For example, if Michael Flanders wanted to board the plane, it would be no good saying to him, “you have the same stairs as everybody else”. What is needed is a way of getting on the plane that will suit everybody’s needs without showing them up and treating them in a way that is worse than other people. * Inclusion: Educational inclusion is about equal opportunities for all pupils, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment and background. It pays particular attention to the provision made for, and the achievement of, different groups of pupils within a school. * Discrimination: Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of an individual based on their membership in a certain group or category

Describe ways in which discrimination may deliberately or inadvertently occur in the work setting Discrimination may deliberately occur in the work place because they may be being treated less favourable, or treated differently because of their gender, age, race, disability, sexuality, or religion.

Discrimination may inadvertently take place when a rule or policy that applies equally to everybody is more restrictive for people from a certain group. For example if a company gives information about its policies only in English.

Explain how practices that support equality and inclusion reduce the likelihood of discrimination. By supporting a person’s equality you are treating them as equal and including them in all activities, you will be reducing the likelihood of discrimination.

Identify which legislation and codes of practice to equality, diversity and discrimination apply to own role Equality- Protecting the dignity of service users (respecting their privacy etc), ensuring staff are fully trained and supervised (there are specific requirements set out for this).

Diversity- There are standards around recognising service users different needs (these could be religious, communication needs etc). The way in which we interact with each other in society is regulated by law. The Equality Act 2010 brings together all previous acts relating to equality and discrimination. The Act applies to all organisations that provide a service to the public. [ The Act protects all individuals and groups from discrimination. Early years setting must be aware of these laws and have in place a policy regarding equality of opportunities and for supporting children with learning difficulties and disabilities Providers must also have regard to the SEN code of practice. The EYFS also states that providers have a responsibility to ensure positive attitudes to diversity and difference. Within my setting we have a Equality and Diversity policy and a SEN and disability policy these policies must be followed by staff and integrated in to our working practice. The policies bring together all the main points from the various acts and the requirements of the EYFS

Show interaction with individuals that respects their beliefs, culture, values and preferences You do not have to give your employees time off and facilities for religious observance but you should try to do so when possible. For example, if you get a request for a prayer room and there is a suitable room available, you should allow staff to use it, provided it does not disrupt others Describe how to challenge discrimination in a way that encourages change The way to deal with discrimination is to deal with it at the time it has arisen and encourage talking and meetings to discourage this behavior

There are many different sources of information that you can use for advice on equality , diversity and inclusion such as managers and senior staff within the setting , the settings policies and procedures on diversity , equality and inclusion , the internet , you could contact outreach agencies , the NSPCC , child line and local services for support
