It Is Important to Live in a Democracy

Democracy would indeed be hollow if it fails to generate the spirit of brotherhood amongst all sections of the people- a feeling that we are all children of the same soil, the same motherland. It is a happy feeling for us to live in a democratic country. There is complete equality among the boys and the girls, among the men and the women. There is complete equality not only before the law but also in the political spheres. All person irrespective of their educational qualification, are allowed to participate in the political system like any other person. Hence, universal adult suffrage has been adopted with this view in mind. The offering of equal opportunity to men and women in the matter of public employment also associates this democratic ideal.

For this offering all men and women with the help of their education are getting themselves employed in almost everywhere – from Public sector banks, in corporations , in civil services, etc. Every person in the territory of India, irrespective of his proprietary or educational qualifications, should be allowed to participate in the political system like any other person. This means that every five years, the members of Legislatures of the Union and of each State shall be elected by the vote of the entire adult population. The offering of equal opportunities to men and women, irrespective of their caste and creed, in the matter of public employment also implements this democratic ideal.

Democracy cannot be established under certain minimal rights, which are essential for a free and civilized existence. Guaranteeing of certain rights to individual is meaningless unless all inequality is banished from the social structure and each individual is assured of equality of status and opportunity for the development of the best in him and the means for the enforcement of the rights guaranteed to him. We believe in democracy. Our ancient philosophy has withstood every difficulty by adopting various ideas and different cultures. We possess excellently among ourselves the endurance as well as the resilience.

Over the years our pre-occupation has been with building and developing in every spheres-from construction of roads and construction of bridges; from the rail roads (from narrow gauge to broad gauge),from high speed trains to petroleum and chemical industries, from establishment of IIMs and IITs. In all major cities of our country many super-speciality hospitals as well as multi-speciality hospitals have come into being. In the aviation history in the state of Kerala in India, Kerala is getting its fourth international airport in the city of Kannur .In fact, it is an another sign of development in a democratic country.

Our objective is not to influence others, on the other hand our objective is to strengthen and consolidate our political and economic independence. We believe in freedom with a passion and that only those who have been denied from democracy can understand this better. We believe in equality from the core of our heart. We believe in the worth of the human being, for that is the foundation of our democracy and our work for development. We believe in world peace. No two democratic countries can have the same angle of vision; even so each can try to appreciate the hands of the other on which to build and to enhance our co-operation. We firmly oppose them who deviate from democracy.

Democratic ideals served as a bridge among us. We may have mutual differences, yet it is a big area to prove our strength, our stability, our economic potential, our scientific exchanges for better understanding. Railway system in Assam (India) was initiated when the Assam Railways and Trading Company was formed by the British under the leadership of Dr. John Barry White. The Assam Bengal Railway was formed to provide railway connection to Assam with the rest of India. There has been rapid and extensive expansion of railway lines in India since then on. The railways in Assam has great economic significance as the development of coal, oil and tea industries depend to a large extent on transportation facilities provided by the railway industry.

All good young boys and girls are getting themselves engaged in Nationalised banks, in Old Private Sector Banks like Federal Bank Ltd and in New Private Sector Banks like ICICI Bank Ltd, HDFC Bank Ltd, etc. Balanced regional development is an important condition for the harmonious and smooth development of a democratic country. It indicates utilisation of development potential of all areas as per the capacity so that the benefit of overall economic growth is shared by the inhabitants of all the different regions of the country. Thus to attain regional balance, it is quite important that the backward regions should try to attain higher rate of growth than that of the developed areas.

In order to improve the condition of tea industry in Assam, various steps have been taken by our country. In order to increase the demand for tea in the international market our government has set up “Tea Board.” This board is trying to increase the demand for Indian tea in England, Canada, America, Germany, etc. through various types of publicity. On the other hand, “Indian Tea Board” has been trying to increase the domestic demand for tea within the country and also advancing financial assistance to the tea gardens. An other recent development in the history of tea plantation in Assam is the inclusion of small tea growers for production and supply of green leaf to the tea factories owned by bigger tea gardens. The All Assam Tea Grower Association has chalked out a plan to create about 1lakh 30 thousand small tea growers and thereby to employ at least 5 lacs educated youths and 14 lacs labourers by the end of 2020.

The picture of a democratic republic which our Preamble envisages is democratic not only from the political point of view but also from the social standpoint. It envisages not only a democratic form of government but also a democratic society, infused with the spirit of ‘justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.’ The people of India are to exercise their sovereignty through a Parliament at the Centre and a Legislature in each Stare, which is to be elected on adult franchise and to which the real Executive, namely, the Council of Ministers, shall be responsible. The Construction of a Democracy holds out equality to all the citizens in the matters of choice of their representatives, who are to run the governmental machinery. It is essential that every person in the territory of India, irrespective of their proprietary or educational qualifications, should be allowed to participate in the political system like any other person.

Good democracy monitors the efficiency of the laws in force, the efficiency of the decisions made by government and the political responsibility and accountability of elected officials in relation to the demands.
