In the modern world, education plays a great role in developing people’s knowledge. Higher education imparts special knowledge to students and helps them to hone their skill in their field of interest. Therefore, further education should be provided to university students free of cost. However, in developed countries with a large population and underdeveloped countries which are poor this idea will not be feasible. This essay will argue that higher education should not be free for everyone. Firstly, we will look quality, function and job opportunities from university education to prove this type of education should not be free anyone. In general, the main disadvantage of free higher education is job opportunities. In the recent year, there has been a rapid rise in the number of graduates. However, most students find their jobs which do not need to require the degree. In addition to this, a number of students get some bachelor degree or master degree but they have difficulties to find a job which is suitable for their study.

A study by the ONS found that nearly 50% of workers who left university in the past five years are doing jobs which do not require a degree (Pettinger 2015). Furthermore, almost half of recent universities leavers are working in non- graduate jobs, as those with media studies degree fare the worst. According to the Office for National Statistics (2014) found that 47 percent of employment workers who left university within the last five years are performing parts which do not require higher education qualification. This figure is up from 37 percent in 2001, with most of rise occurring since the recession of 2009. The finding will show that the Uk’s recovering economy is based on kinds of elements such as: skill, income, class, social role. As a consequence, there is a mistake to continue to fund expansion of university education because the economy does not need more graduate as much as other skills Secondly, the second disadvantage of free higher education is signalling function of higher education.

Signalling function is associated with shifts in demand and supply curves (Economic online 2014) It is said that universities education acts as a signal to employers that graduates have greater capacity. It means that when people get a degree so they get a good job and high salary. Signalling in higher education suggests productivity in independent of education, but education acts as credential for higher ability. However, the education might not actually increase our labour productivity, but only show us have the capacity to be able to be an employee. For example, a degree in ancient Greek may never use in your job as an account. In this case, the only function of higher education is signalling our ability. As a reported by Richard Blundell and colleagues (2000) suggest some reasons higher education may have mailed a signalling function that “University drop outs earn less than students with just A level”. In theory, drop outs should earn more because they have more years of education. However, a drop out may signal poor ability to employers”.

If education is signalling function, this would suggest an expansion of higher education is not justified and put more funds into shorter, more practical vocational training than three year degree. Moreover, if education was 100% signalling, there would be a justification for taxing education. Therefore, if they financially gain from studying at university, it is perhaps fair they pay part of the cost. Thirdly, the last disadvantage of free education is higher quality education. According to VVOB (2012) defines it as is one that provides all learners with capabilities they require to become economically productive, develop sustainable livelihoods, contributes to peaceful and democratic societies and enhance individual well- being. The learning outcome that are required vary according to context but at the end of the basic education cycle must include threshold levels of literacy and numeracy, basic scientific knowledge ad life skills including awareness and prevention of disease.

Capacity development to improve the quality of teachers and other education stakeholder is crucial throughout this process. A number of universities have been rapidly increasing. It means that the big pressure is being put on university resources. If universities can charge students, it will help maintain standards, quality of teaching and the reputation of universities. In fact, some study has shown that (Economics help 2014) the proportion of students is 18 years olds account for 50 %. This figure increases in student numbers is an important factor to the increased financial pressures on universities.

As a result, when the universities is pressed on increasing finance, they are not enough money to invest in setting up and developing for modern facilities, improving expertise level of teacher’s groups. Therefore, it influence on not only learners but also quality of education It is undeniable that education is an essential factor in developing people’s culture. It is said that many people could get some benefits from free higher education but others do not think that. This essay has shown that higher education should not free for everyone because the higher education provide great value of knowledge for people. As a consequence, education is the wings which help human to achieve dreams about scientific knowledge.
