We have been celebrating since the moment we come to the earth. We celebrate on the day we born every year, which is our birthday. We celebrate for the birth of Jesus Christ, which is the Christmas. We celebrate on the first day of every year, which is the New Year. There are different kinds of celebrations in the world and most of them are related to festivals. In Brazil, in every late February till early March, one of the most renowned festivals in the world will be held in the capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. Rio carnival is a very traditional festival to Brazilian and the carnival parade is highly populated by both the locals and the foreign visitors. The typical Rio carnival parade is filled with revelers, floats and adornments from numerous samba schools which are located in Rio. The climax of the entire carnival festival is the competition form different samba schools, each school chooses a theme to try and portray in their entry. The samba schools work to build the best floats, costumes, lyrics, and aesthetics, to represent their themes. Moving to the other side of the world, we have the Oben festival from Japan, this is actually a pretty horrifying festival, since the other name of this festivals is the “ghost festival”.
The festival of Oben lasts for three days, however its starting date varies within different regions of Japan. As Oben occurs in the heat of the summer, participants traditionally wear Yukata, or light cotton kimonos. Many Oben celebrations include a huge carnival with rides, games, and summer festival food like watermelon. The festival ends with Toro Nagashi, or the floating of lanterns. Paper lanterns are illuminated and then floated down rivers symbolically signaling the ancestral spirits’ return to the world of the dead. This ceremony usually culminates in a fireworks display. Giving an overview to the world celebration, they all seemed joyful and rapturous and this is what festivals and celebrations supposed to be. The ultimate aim of celebrations and festivals are basically encouraging people to enjoy their life and have a positive attitude towards their life. However, in this sarcastic planet which sadness and privation are always around us, there are still countless people that desperate from help. While we are celebrating for happiness, at the same time, they might be suffering from sickness, starvation or even the tragedy bought by war and natural disasters.
Therefore, rather than thinking about celebration, we should concern about things that are a lot more deeper than it which are the poor situations in the other side of the world. However, it doesn’t mean we should not celebrate at all, since celebration is really unique, it is free and it brings happiness to people. Besides, it also bears a very arduous mission which is to promote world peace. By celebrating with people around you, we can overcome not only the communication barrier between different races, but also conflicts between countries. Moreover, celebration acts as a bridge between people, for them to share happiness. To wrap up my text, the real meaning of celebrations is so deep which you could never understand, so never underestimate the influence it can make to make this world a better, vibrant one.
