George was faced with the toughest decision of his life when he chose to kill his best friend. He knew this was the best for Lennie. Although George really didn’t want to he knew doing this would make Lennie’s death painless. If George didn’t kill him then the other men would have brutally beaten then murdered Lennie.
Lennie always gets himself into trouble by wandering around. When Lennie and George arrived at the ranch one night the men go out. Lennie stays behind and goes into the barn and enters into Crooks’s room. Crooks tells Lennie to leave and not to come back but Lennie doesn’t care. Crooks says “You got no right to come in my room…Nobody got any right in here but me” (68). Lennie still doesn’t understand Crooks’s request. Lennie didn’t really understand why Crooks was alone and how he didn’t want him there. Lennie just wanted to be with someone and have someone to talk too.
Lennie doesn’t know his own strength, his whole life he’s been hurting living things. When Lennie was young his Aunt would give him mice but every time he managed to kill the mice. When something would pull away or even bite him he would squeeze down until they stopped moving. Curley tried to pick a fight with Lennie. Curley went to punch Lennie again and Lennie grab Curley’s fist and crushed his hand. George screams at Lennie “Leggo of him, Lennie. Let go” (63). Lennie didn’t know what he had done.
Lennie ends up doing the worst things possible. He ends up killing his puppy by accident. He also kills Curley’s wife in the barn. Lennie’s entire life he’s been killing things without knowing what he’s done. Lennie grab Curley’s wife, “Don’t you go yelling and shook her” (91). Lennie wasn’t sure what he had done. George had no choice but to kill Lennie because of what he had done.
Although it was such a tough decision George made the right choice to kill Lennie. If he didn’t the other men were going to brutally murder Lennie. George just wanted to give Lennie an easy death. It hurt George to kill Lennie but after he thought he knew he had done the right thing. Would your choice be the same as George did or would you want to watch your best friend get brutally beaten then eventually killed.
