Next plc is a United Kingdom based retailer offering products in clothing, footwear, accessories and home products. The Company distributes through three channels: Next Retail, a chain of more than 500 stores in the United Kingdom and Eire; Next Directory, a home shopping catalogue and Website with around three million customers and international Websites serving approximately 50 countries, and Next International, with approximately 200 stores globally. Other group businesses include NEXT Sourcing, which designs, sources and buys NEXT branded products; Lipsy, which designs and sells its own branded younger women’s fashion products through retail, Internet and wholesale channels. If the Board adopts the wrong business strategy or does not implement its strategies effectively, the business may suffer. The Board reviews business strategy on a regular basis to determine how sales and profit budgets can be achieved or bettered and business operations made more efficient. This process involves the setting of annual budgets and longer term financial models to identify ways in which the Group can increase shareholder value. Critical to these processes are the consideration of wider economic and industry specific trends that affect the Group’s businesses, the competitive position of its product offer and the financial structure of the Group (Next Corporate, 2012).

Their top competitors are Arcadia Group Ltd, Debenhams Plc and Marks and Spencer Plc. There are many tools for competitive analysis but the important ones are; Porter’s five forces model, PEST Analysis, Group mapping, Pricing and quantity dynamics, SWOT analysis and etc… (Oxbridge Graduates, 2012).
