A building is said to be functional as it provides shelter, control, and instruction and can demonstrate dominion over a lesser-sized architectural structure. In 1964, the New York Times declared “ Architecture is the ART of how to waste space” (pearce). So can a celebrated building be a work of art? The desire to decorate habitats has been with us for as long as the need to have shelter. This creative process has given meaning to build spaces, objects, and sculptures which have given the world a new face of history, culture, folk, art forms, etc. which all belonged together and would continue to. Architecture has been a influenced greatly by the Gothic, Roman, Baroque, Renaissance periods and the cultures of the East and West including the Chinese civilizations as well as the various empires of India. Even the changes in fashion styles, or the artistic beauty and other subliminal qualities enhance the commercial value of buildings. Art is understood to be an integral part of architecture, as it always has been until fairly recently. Only when we are taught that art is part of architecture just as plumbing or wall finishes or landscaping, will budgets be established accordingly and architects will not be forced to `hide’ costs for murals under the codes for paint or landscaping.

Le Corbusier, the famous Swiss-French architect, while trying to integrate art and architecture to get a symbiotic relationship between them, once said: “You employ stone, wood and concrete, and within these materials you build houses and palaces. That is construction. Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good, I am happy and I say: “This is beautiful”. That is Architecture. Art enters in. Thus, Le Corbusier asserts that this relationship between Art and Architecture is somewhat symbiotic. Both art and architecture evolve with patterns of life and without architecture, there could be no proper existing form of art in the world. Architecture and Art, both evolve with the patterns of life. Stained glass murals and paintings in mosques, chapels and churches are a very good example to show this unique relationship between art and architecture. The term stained glass was derived from the silver stain that was often applied to the side of the window that would face the outside of the building.

Stained glass was considered more of a domestic luxury than an artistic medium. When the glass was fired, the silver stain turned a yellow color that could range from lemon to gold. Stained glass was usually used to make windows, so that the light would shine through the painting. It is a form of painting that began over 1,000 years ago and is still essentially made the same way today. (‘Stained Glass: History And Technique’) The following case studies from the pre modern era will be a better example to explain the importance and usage of stained glass. St.Peter’s Basilica is an Italian Renaissance church in Vatican City, the papal enclave within the city of Rome .Entering St. Peter’s Basilica is a wonderful journey. At the end of the basilica is the Bernini’s Altar, illuminated by the Dove of the Holy Spirit stained-glass window. The famous window was made by a small, family-run workshop in Rome’s charming neighborhood of Trastevere.

This stained glass shows the symbolic representation of the holy spirit. This explains that architecture can bring out purposeful meanings. The bright orange on the windows brings in a vibrant ray of light into the basilica. There’s not only light falling in but also the holy spirit of the dove which does not need to be seen only inside a holy place but also on a window pane showing a better meaning. Sultan Ahmed or The Blue Mosque is a historic mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey. This beautiful structures has over 200 stained glasses with intricate designs admitting natural light. The stained glasses for the windows were a gift of the Signoria of Venice to the sultan. Most of these have been replaced by modern versions with not much artistic merit. So this relationshiop between art and architecture sows the strength in friendship by making a received gift a part of the mosque by itself but also shows how ot declined as they have been replaced and with not meaning.

From the beginning of dawn the mosque is filled with ravishing colors and lights. Sun shines through the glass and fills the inside, the persian rugs, the ceiling and wall tiles with patterns and colours. The rising sun makes the whole room burst with shades like in a kaleidoscope. When the Sun hits stained glass of the mosque the entire building folds into a rainbow of colours. It stupefies one that how the architects were able to combine so many shades, colours and alluring delineations into one fine mosque The Nasir al-Mulk Mosque also known as the Pink Mosque is a traditional mosque in Shiraz, Iran. Shiraz has tasteful delight to quench your architectural thirst. Although Shiraz has about 200 mosques but architecture of pink mosque is a completely different thing. The mosqueis filled with vibrant colours and lights. The sunlight falls through the glass and inside the mosque showing the patterns and designs. It is a place of worship. It is a breathtaking example of Islamic architecture. Entering into this mosque feels like looking into a kaleidoscope because of the sunlight and the colourful patterns. The entire mosque feels like a rainbow. The Pink Mosque features a façade decorated with a row of stained glass windows.

These windows allow sunlight to fall in and offer the worshippers a sunlit spectacle everyday at dawn .The light illuminates the interior’s rose-colored tiles and patterned Persian carpet with an enchanting array of vivid colors. The architects were successfully able to combine so many shades and colours. This explains that stained glass windows can not only bring in light and brighten up the place but also make the worshippers feel brightened, happy and energised. It feels vibrant and fresh. Stain glasses can be created based on a particlar period like gothic stained glass or the renaissance stained glass and can even be varying in size, large ones or a single piece of glass. There are a lot of differneces and similarities in many aspects of the three case studies. Stained glass by itslef has a lot of meaning in particular and therefore has a visual characteristics. The differnece is that every art work on the stained glass in a particular architectural structure shows a different, eventfull, emotional or interesting meaning. The case above show the holy spirit through the glass, emotions of friendship and peace as a place of worship. This also proves that stained glass is not a domestic luxury but somewhere gives a very artistic connect to the viewers making them fall in love with it.
