yes Social networking sites balance a child’s privacy and a parent’s right to know. A classic clash always happens when pitting the right to privacy of a child against the right to know of a parent; however, social networking sites find a happy medium, so that neither side is overlooked; for example, on Facebook, a teenager may have private conversations with a friend over the private messaging system, but the parent of this teenager will still be able to keep track of things such as posts made to other friends’ walls, pictures posted, etc. Social networking sites give parents the ability to keep tabs on many of their child’s online postings, such as pictures and personal information, but without having to directly invade on their child’s privacy; this again proves that social networking sites have had a positive effect on society. They can get word out to multiple people at one time, a la a TV news bulletin. This can be very helpful in the event of a weather emergency, like informing others of a tornado warning. Social networking sites increase social interaction and connections. Social networking sites have a beneficial effect on our way of life. They increase our social interaction and give us more ways to make social connections. As long as the individual remembers and accepts that a decrease in privacy comes with that increased social interaction, then it is a benefit. Who wouldn’t want to have the time for face-to-face conversations with family, close friends and people who just generally mean something to you, and you want to keep in touch? I think that social networking sites help keep friends and families together, no matter the distance. Without the benefit of social networking, many families and relationships would fail under the burden of long distance phone charges or the long period of waiting you have to suffer when using the regular mail. With the use of social networking people not only get to stay in touch, for free in many cases, but they can get a response in minutes, instead of days, weeks or even months by regular mail. Social networking sites hurt society by encouraging superficiality and narcissism but they also help society. Overall, social networking sites are beneficial to our way of life. Although social networking sites have their downside, I believe that they are generally beneficial. In this day and age, when personal communication and relationships are in jeopardy, social networking sites at least keep people somewhat connected. And, through an extended network of friends one can keep connections in tact that would have, otherwise, faded with time, gotten lost when the phone number was lost or been cut off by distance. Within the context of social networking sites people also have found a place to vent and show other emotions that they might not have shown face to face, or to certain individuals. This gives them a chance to receive comfort and conciliation from unassuming places. When an individual joins a social networking site such as Facebook or MySpace they are more than likely looking to connect with friends and family. That connection increases positive relationships among those established relationships. Pictures and videos are shared between the connected group which is a positive action. Also, the ability to build new relationships with people who share common friends and interests is another added benefit. Social networking on the Internet is beneficial in re-establishing human contact in our digital age since some human interaction is better than none even if it is electronically. I spend many hours writing at the computer. It’s my job. Some days I don’t even bother to get out of my pajamas because I know that the whole day will be spent writing articles or doing research at the computer. If a few days would go by without being able to have a laugh or shed a tear because of something family and friends told me on the social networking sites, I might become further disconnected from friends and family due to the work. I have a day job outside the home too so I get plenty of direct human contact. Some people earn their entire living on the computer at home, and need to work fourteen hour days just to avoid bankruptcy. I personally know them! Social networking is a light in the darkness of the new job slavery.
