The “big idea” I chose to write about is “Teen Pregnancy”. My thesis statement is “Teen Pregnancy is a growing problem here in the United States. School and parents need to educate their teen on the consequences before it’s too late”. My thesis statement will be effective because it grabs your attention, and explains what I will be talking about. The challenges I might face in supporting this thesis is getting the correct information, and finding the right amount of information I need to support it.
When I do research on my topic I need to make sure my source is reliable and up to date. I found some useful websites on the internet such as teenhelp.com, wiki.com, and healthfinder.gov. There are organizations such as The Candies Foundation, New Hope and National Support Center. I am going to be interviewing a young teen mom; she will be talking about what it’s like for her and the expenses that comes along with it. Some teens will probably not want to hear why it’s important for them not to get pregnant and the consequences, but once they hear someone else’s story, they might realize why it’s so important.
If I were to pitch an argument on teen pregnancy it will say: The growth of teenage pregnancy has gone up. Teens need to realize what the consequences are, such as having to drop out of school, expenses, lack of sleep, not being able to hang out with friends as much and having your body change. We need to do something about it before our teenage daughter’s get pregnant. Talking to your child about it can make a difference. Over 820,000 teens become pregnant each year (teenhelp.com). We need to educate them before it is too late.
