There are many mysterious places in all nations that well-known all around world. Among those places, Lascaux Cave is famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings which is located in southwestern France. Researchers of the cave found it as 17300 years old. They primarily consist of images of large animals, most of which are known from fossil evidence to have lived in the area at the time. In 1979, Lascaux was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This place is also known as “First color photos from another world”. First studied by the French archaeologist Henri-Édouard-Prosper Breuil, the Lascaux grotto consists of a main cavern 66 feet wide and 16 feet high. The walls of the cavern are decorated with some 600 painted and drawn animals and symbols and nearly 1,500 engravings. The pictures depict in excellent detail numerous types of animals, including horses, red deer, stags, bovines, felines, and what appear to be mythical creatures. There is only one human figure depicted in the cave: a bird-headed man with an erect phallus.

Archaeologists believe that the cave was used over a long period of time as a center for hunting and religious rites. Lascaux cave was discovered in 1940 September 12 by 4 teenagers, who were travelling around France with their dog named Robot. Suddenly the dog ran down as he smelt something special. 4 teenagers ran after him to catch it, but they realized that they came to a very special place. Boys removed the big stone which closed the cave. When they entered, they found an amazing old pictures in cave wall. However some people say that Robot wasn`t the one that discovered the cave though teenagers already knew about the cave. Soon the boys decided to tell their schoolteacher, Leon Laval, about their discovery.

They knew Laval was interested in archaeology and would know what to do about their fantastic find. After its discovery, the artwork of the cave amazed the world, and brought more than a million visitors to Lascaux between 1948 and 1963. Closed to the public since the 1960s to protect and preserve the cave, Lascaux remains the world icon of art from the dawn of man. For 10 years, from 1972 to 1983, French artist Monique Peytral documented and reproduced the paintings of the Hall of the Bulls and Axial Gallery. The result, Lascaux 2, is a life-size replica that can be visited at Montignac. To make Lascaux accessible to an international public, the cave has been recreated in a new and unique set of 5 exact replicas of the paintings in the Nave and the Well Scene. Contemplate the paintings, their splendor and power, in an atmosphere of silence and lamplight, in which one can ponder the origins of humanity. Watch the animals move in the flickering light of the oil lamps and the torches of the Lascaux artists.

This international exhibition brings together state-of-the-art digital technologies in order to make the visit interactive and unforgettable—simulators of human presence, virtual trips using the most advanced 3D projections, interactive terminals as well as multimedia and a model of the cave. You will be able to travel throughout the whole cave in a virtual tour before admiring the life-size recreations of the Nave and the Well. In conclusion, Lascaux cave is one of the most mysterious places that exist in the world. It has thousands of paintings and engravings that over 20000 years old. Scientists and researchers had recreated it and developed the cave. It is also tourist attraction which is unforgettable place to visit. Lascaux 2 opened in order to protect the original version of the cave and tourists can see its copy in Lascaux 2.
